IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol)
This protocol allows mail to be read directly from the mail server. The messages remain on the server.
POP3 (Post Office Protocol version 3)
This protocol allows mail to be downloaded from the mail server. Usually when using this protocol, the mail client removes the messages from the server after downloading them. This is the most popular protocol in use.
SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol)
This protocol is used to send mail.
