How can I use my own error pages?

You can define your own error pages by using an .htaccess file. This is the syntax of that file:

ErrorDocument 404 page.html

The path to your error page must be relative, this means the exact location starting from the .htaccess file. The easiest way of creating such an .htaccess file, is by using Notepad (or a similar simple text editor on other operating systems, such as TextEdit), and saving the contents of the file as '.htaccess.txt'. You can then upload it to your webspace via FTP, and then rename it to '.htaccess'.

You will need to place this .htaccess file in the root of your web folder, www.domain.be for example. If you specified an invalid command or keyword in the .htaccess file, it will result in a 500 'Internal Server Error' on your website.

In the example we used the error code 404, which stands for 'File or directory not found'. You can also use other error codes:

401 (Authorization required)
403 (Forbidden)
500 (Internal Server Error)
