How do I upgrade a phpBB forum?

It's very important to keep your forum up to date to prevent crackers from entering your account. Below are instructions to upgrade your forum to the latest version.

1. Go to http://www.phpbb.com/downloads.php.

2. Click the link 'Zip' next to 'phpBB 2.0.VERSION [Changed Files Only]', where 'VERSION' is the highest available.

3. After downloading, open the file and extract the files into a temporary location on your hard disk.

4. Open the directory where you extracted the files to.

5. You will see several new zip files choose the one containing the current version of your phpBB installation (eg. when using phpBB 2.0.8 you will need the file 2.0.8_to_2.0.VERSION.zip).

6. This file contains all updated scripts. You need to extract these and upload them to your account, overwriting existing files.

7. You then open http://yourdomain/location-of-forum/install/upgrade_to_latest.php and follow further instructions displayed.

8. When all steps have been finished, remove the directories 'install' and 'contrib'.
