How do permissions work?
Permissions control which users and groups can execute certain actions on a file or folder.
On our servers, you can set your own permissions on files and folders. Permissions are either compiled to a numeric or textual combination. Within the whole concept, there are three groups:
- User (the owner of the file (u))
- Group (the group of the file (g))
- Others (all others (o))
These three groups can have a combination of the following permissions:
Read
Letter code 'r' or number '4'
The designated user or group can view the contents of a directory or file.
Write
Letter code 'w' or number '2'
The designated user or group can change the contents of the directory or file.
Execute
Letter code 'x' or number '2'
The designated user or group can execute or run a file.
Most FTP clients, such as SmartFTP or LeechFTP, have a GUI that allow you to easily change the permissions of a file or directory.
